Fuel Storage Tips

All fuel types manufactured at the Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC) and distributed through the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS) are of the highest quality. Our fuel is designed to meet or exceed the most stringent industry and equipment specifications, including those mandated by the international Top Tier program. Regardless of the product's initial high quality, all refined petroleum fuels have finite life. Both gasoline and diesel are complex mixtures of many components that in aggregate, support both vehicle performance and the health of the fuel (delivery) system. As the components age, the fuels can become 'stale' and impact both the vehicle performance and fuel system cleanliness.

The overall condition of the fuel storage tank and fuel storage practices will have the largest impact on the product's life.

• Gasoline:

Be sure to remove any water from the bottom of the fuel storage tanks and containers. Water can enter the tank in a variety of ways including condensation, rain and tank breathing (high levels of humidity).
The tanks physical location will also impact the aging process: the rate of evaporation will accelerate with temperature increases. Storing fuel in shaded areas, away from direct sunlight, will reduce the rate of evaporation. Large temperature fluctuations (hot days/cold nights) will increase storage tank 'breathing'; increasing air/moisture exchange on the tank.
Frequent delivery cycles allow the stored fuel to be regularly replenished with fresh fuel. This process reintroduces additives that may have been used up during storage.
Environmental conditions, although somewhat uncontrollable, will impact a gasoline's shelf life. High temperatures, temperature swings and moisture from any environmental source (condensation, rain, high humidity) will hamper with life expectancy and may lead to additional concerns.

• Diesel:

The aging of diesel fuel is a natural occurrence; although it cannot be completely stopped, steps can be taken to mitigate the speed at which the product ages.

Remove any water from the bottom of storage tanks; especially if bio-diesel is being used. If unchecked, water will increase that rate of in-tank corrosion (rusting), accelerate the aging process and support the formation of fungi and bacteria. Water can promote the formation of organic acids; once produced these acids further reduce the stability of diesel fuel.
Water contamination, in any form, can promote the growth of microoganisms, Microorganism is a bacterial growth in fuel, most commonly diesel. it is most commonly identified as a dark slime, similar to algae. This growth is a result of environmental factors (high humidity and heat). storage cleanliness and water/moisture control.
Typical fill level (headspace) will dictate the amount of air able to enter/exit the tank. As the temperature changes fuel tanks 'breathe', during this process humid air can flow in-and-out of the tank, thus the moisture levels and rate of oxidation. By limiting headspace you will reduce the amount of breathing and limit the process of oxidation and slow the creation of insoluble contaminates.
Regular fuel deliveries and fuel rotation (using the oldest first) will minimize fuel degradation and oxidation.

With the proper storage of our gasoline and diesel, we suggest that it maintains a realistic life of 12 months.Superior care and attention may extend its lifespan.

• Tank choices

Choosing a tank or tanks for your application is dependent on a number of factors, including your proximity to our nearest location, the frequency of our visits into your area, the type and size (BTU rating) of your appliances, and whether your demand is continuous or temporary, predictable or periodic.

Propane Tanks have traditionally been named by their capacity in U.S. gallons, the most common being 500 and 100 gallon tanks. However, since we deliver propane by the litre and tanks are never filled to more than 85% of their capacity, actual usable capacity is an important consideration.

• About Propane

Propane's portability makes it the world’s most versatile fuel. It can do virtually any job that any other energy source is capable of doing and be taken where electricity or natural gas lines can’t economically reach. Propane can be transported and contained in large enough quantities to make it an ongoing and reliable source of energy. You can find it being used in the countryside to heat farms, hog and poultry barns, and grain dryers. Propane is also prominent in Northern communities, remote mining sites, construction sites, resorts and all kinds of temporary applications where other forms of energy are impractical. Propane energy powers oil field pump jacks, portable generators, asphalt plants, roofing tar-pots, forklifts and fleet vehicles as well as a huge variety of camping and recreational vehicle appliances.

About 85% of the 11 billion litres of propane produced in Canada is extracted from natural gas, most of which comes from Alberta. Propane can be transported by rail, pipeline or truck. A typical Co-op Propane distribution centre maintains storage of 30,000 to 60,000 gallons (110,000 to 225,000 litres). Propane is hauled to Co-op Propane distribution centres by 5- or 7-axle semi-trailers from a number of sources including the Co-op Refinery Complex, gas plants and pipeline terminals. Smaller delivery units (10,000 to 32,000 litres) then make deliveries to end users and to over 360 Co-op Gas Bars where it is resold to consumers for a variety of uses.
